The Indian Navy warships deal will add eight indigenously designed corvettes to India’s naval fleet. The contracts are important for national security and defence procurement.
Quick answer: On 2 November 2026, the Defence Ministry signed the Indian Navy warships deal in New Delhi for eight next-generation corvettes. The contracts total Rs 53,866.50 crore. Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers will build five ships and Goa Shipyard will build three. The ships will support maritime security and indigenous shipbuilding.
What does the Indian Navy warships deal cover?
The deal covers the design and construction of eight next-generation corvettes for the Indian Navy. A corvette is a comparatively small warship; these ships are intended for several combat and surveillance roles.
The Navy will design the vessels indigenously. Meanwhile, two defence public sector undertakings (PSUs) will construct them after selection through a competitive process. The ministry described this combination as a first for such a project.

| Second builder | Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL): three ships |

How did the project receive approval?
The Defence Acquisition Council granted acceptance of necessity in June 2022 at an approximate cost of Rs 36,000 crore. This initial approval preceded the final contracts; the two figures refer to different stages of procurement.
Subsequently, the Cabinet Committee on Security cleared the project. The ministry then signed the contracts in New Delhi in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh. For related context, see CBL’s corvettes deal overview.
What will the corvettes do?
The corvettes will undertake missions in the air, surface and sub-surface domains. The ministry says they will carry advanced missiles, weapons and sensor suites.
- Combat roles: The ships will support anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare, as well as search-and-attack missions.
- Coastal operations: They will support coastal defence and littoral combat; littoral refers to waters near the coast.
- Maritime security: They will also conduct surveillance, reconnaissance and presence missions, while helping safeguard trade routes.

Why does the deal matter?
The project combines indigenous naval design with competitively selected public-sector shipbuilding. It also aims to strengthen collaboration with private shipyards and micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh estimated 72 lakh person-days of shipyard employment over ten years. In addition, he estimated 460 lakh person-days in ancillary industries and MSMEs. These are employment-duration estimates, not counts of individual jobs.
