Kuno cheetah shooting arrests have brought renewed attention to wildlife protection outside protected areas. For more environmental updates, see CBL’s geography and environment coverage.
Quick answer: The Kuno cheetah shooting arrests concern two brothers accused of shooting KNG-22 near Nitanwas village in Madhya Pradesh. The 19-month-old male died on 27 October 2026 after pellet injuries. Investigators recovered a firearm and registered a wildlife protection case; they found no evidence so far of an organised wildlife crime link.
Where did the incident occur?
The alleged shooting occurred near Nitanwas in Sheopur district, while the injured cheetah was found in neighbouring Morena. Both districts are in Madhya Pradesh.
| Location | Relevance |
|---|---|
| Nitanwas, Vijaypur, Sheopur | Forest area where the Special Task Force said the shooting occurred. |
| Morena territorial forest division | A monitoring team found KNG-22 injured, outside Kuno National Park. |
| Jabalpur | The cheetah was shifted here for advanced treatment. |
Why is the Kuno cheetah shooting in news?
The Special Task Force (STF) arrested brothers Bhagwan Singh and Pritam Singh in connection with KNG-22’s death. Both are Morena residents. The STF said they had gone hunting near Nitanwas when the cheetah was shot.
Investigators arrested Bhagwan Singh on 31 October and subsequently took his brother into custody. They also recovered a licensed double-barrelled country firearm from a forest area in Morena, according to the STF. The brothers faced a case under the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972.
KNG-22 was born to cheetah Nirva. After a monitoring team found him injured on 25 October, he went to Kuno and then Jabalpur. A computed tomography scan showed internal, musculoskeletal and nervous system damage; emergency surgery recovered five pellets.
He died on 27 October. For the initial inquiry, see CBL’s earlier coverage of the cub’s death.
How did authorities investigate?
Investigators used interviews, searches and radio-collar data to reconstruct the cheetah’s movements. Before the arrests, they had questioned around 20 people and searched homes in the Morena-Sheopur region.
On 27 October, Madhya Pradesh constituted a four-member task force of forest and police officers. In addition, the Union Environment Ministry sent a three-member team. It included officials from the National Tiger Conservation Authority and the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau.
The STF said it had found no evidence so far linking the killing to illegal wildlife trade or an organised wildlife crime network. This finding describes the investigation to that point, not a court verdict.
Why does the incident matter for conservation?
The incident highlights the need to monitor cheetahs when they move beyond protected-area boundaries. After KNG-22’s death, the reported Indian cheetah population stood at 58: 52 at Kuno National Park, four at Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary and two at Veerangana Durgavati Tiger Reserve.
For Prelims, distinguish the place of alleged shooting from the place where the injured animal was found. Also remember that the central team examined security arrangements for cheetahs outside protected areas.
