Why are Pune Metro projects in the news?

The Prime Minister will inaugurate Line 3 and lay the foundation stone for Phase II by video conference. The event is scheduled for 12:30 pm on 3 November 2026; he will also address a gathering.

Line 3 cost more than ₹8,300 crore to build. In addition, Phase II has an estimated cost of about ₹13,500 crore. The two components together account for the announced project value of approximately ₹21,800 crore.

What is the Pink Line?

The Pink Line, or Line 3, connects Maan with District Court Metro station over approximately 23 km. It will also provide metro connectivity between the Hinjewadi information technology (IT) hub and Shivajinagar.

Women train operators will operate the entire line, according to the announcement. Moreover, the project envisages meeting about 30% of its total electricity requirements through solar power.

The corridor will integrate with the existing metro network. As a result, passengers will have connections to other parts of Pune as well as the Hinjewadi employment hub.

Which corridors are included in Phase II?

Phase II covers Lines 2A, 2B, 4 and 4A; their foundation stone is scheduled for 3 November. The following table separates the proposed routes from the Pink Line, which is scheduled for inauguration.

Line Route and length
2A Vanaz–Chandni Chowk; 12.75 km combined with 2B
2B Ramwadi–Vitthalwadi; 12.75 km combined with 2A
4 Kharadi–Khadakwasla; approximately 25.52 km
4A Nal Stop–Manik Baug; 6.12 km

Lines 2A and 2B will extend the existing east–west network. In addition, the new corridors will connect areas including Magarpatta, Hadapsar, Swargate, Nanded City, Pune Cantonment and Warje.

Why do these projects matter?

The projects aim to connect residential, commercial and employment centres through an integrated public transport network. In particular, the Ramwadi–Vitthalwadi extension aims to improve access to the growing Kharadi and Wagholi areas.

Planned interchanges at Swargate, Nal Stop and Kharadi Bypass will link the corridors with existing metro services and intercity buses. The Pink Line also aims to reduce reliance on private vehicles and, consequently, traffic congestion and vehicle emissions.
