Quick answer: Under the Indian Navy corvettes deal, the Ministry of Defence recently signed contracts in New Delhi for eight next-generation corvettes. Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers will build five, while Goa Shipyard will build three. The ₹53,866.50 crore project aims to strengthen maritime security and indigenous warship construction.
What does the Indian Navy corvettes deal cover?
The deal covers eight next-generation corvettes for the Indian Navy. The Ministry of Defence signed the contracts in New Delhi after the Cabinet Committee on Security approved the project. The signing took place in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh.
A corvette is a naval warship used for combat and other maritime missions. These ships will carry advanced missiles, weapons and sensor suites. Consequently, they can undertake missions across the air, surface and sub-surface domains.
| Feature | Key fact |
|---|---|
| Contract value | ₹53,866.50 crore |
| GRSE allocation | Five corvettes |
| GSL allocation | Three corvettes |
| Design | Indigenous design by the Indian Navy |
Which shipyards will build the corvettes?
Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited (GRSE) will build five ships; Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) will construct three. Both are defence public sector undertakings (PSUs), and the government selected them through a competitive process.
According to the ministry, this is the first project combining Indian Navy design with construction by competitively selected defence PSUs. For another indigenous naval platform, read about INS Mangrol and anti-submarine warfare.
What roles will the ships perform?
The corvettes will support combat, surveillance and coastal defence missions. Their planned roles include anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare, maritime reconnaissance, and search-and-attack operations.
They will also support maritime presence and the safeguarding of trade routes. In addition, littoral operations focus on waters near the coast. For related equipment procurement, see the BrahMos naval fire-control deal.
Why does the project matter?
The project combines naval capability with indigenous design and shipbuilding. In June 2022, the Defence Acquisition Council granted acceptance of necessity at an approximate cost of ₹36,000 crore; the signed contracts total ₹53,866.50 crore.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh estimated 72 lakh person-days of work in shipyards and 460 lakh person-days in ancillary industries and micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) over ten years. These are estimates of work generated, not counts of jobs. Moreover, the project aims to strengthen collaboration among defence PSUs, private shipyards and Indian industry.
