PMGSY-IV Mizoram roads have received approval for 45 construction works to improve rural connectivity. The decision adds to the state’s earlier road sanctions; explore more national current affairs for UPSC.
Quick answer: Under PMGSY-IV Mizoram roads approvals, the ministry has sanctioned 45 works covering 509.54 km in the first batch of 2026–27. Costing ₹710.40 crore, these projects aim to give 48 habitations their first all-weather road connections. They are intended to improve access to schools, hospitals and rural markets.
What is PMGSY?
The Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) is a rural road connectivity scheme. Launched in 2000, it focuses on connecting eligible rural habitations through all-weather roads.
PMGSY-IV is the scheme’s fourth phase. In the Mizoram announcement, the ministry approved new construction works under its first batch for financial year 2026–27.
What do the Mizoram approvals include?
The new batch comprises 45 road works intended to connect 48 habitations for the first time. The figures below relate to approvals, not completed construction.
| Indicator | Approved batch |
|---|---|
| Phase and batch | PMGSY-IV, batch 1 of 2026–27 |
| Road works | 45 |
| Road length | 509.54 km |
| Project value | ₹710.40 crore |
| Habitations to receive first all-weather connectivity | 48 |
The PMGSY-IV Mizoram roads are therefore measured in both road length and habitations connected. A habitation is a settlement; the number of works need not equal the number of habitations.
What had already been sanctioned?
Before the new batch, Mizoram had already received approval for 367 road works and seven bridges under PMGSY. Those road works covered 4,935 km and had an approved value of ₹3,412 crore.
These earlier sanctions are additional to the new PMGSY-IV Mizoram roads. Therefore, do not treat the earlier figures as part of the 45-work batch or as evidence that the works are complete.
Why does rural road connectivity matter?
All-weather roads can improve access to schools, hospitals and rural markets. In addition, better links can help residents reach services and economic opportunities throughout the year.
Mizoram lies in northeast India and shares international borders with Bangladesh and Myanmar. For broader regional context, read about connectivity in Northeast India; the PMGSY approval concerns rural roads within Mizoram.
