Why in News

With nearly 40 mines accounting for around 90% of global natural diamond production expected to be exhausted within the next 50 years, lab-grown diamonds are gaining attention as a scalable and reliable source of supply.

What are Lab Grown Diamonds?

Lab-grown diamonds are artificially produced diamonds that possess the same chemical, physical, and optical properties as natural diamonds. Both consist of pure carbon atoms arranged in a cubic crystal lattice.

The only difference lies in their origin. Natural diamonds form over billions of years deep inside the Earth’s mantle, whereas laboratory methods recreate similar conditions within a few weeks.

Methods of Production

Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD)

  • Produces diamonds layer by layer.
  • Methane and hydrogen gases are ionized into a superheated plasma inside a vacuum chamber.
  • Carbon atoms gradually deposit over a diamond seed crystal.
  • This process resembles carbon crystallization occurring in interstellar gas clouds.

High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT)

  • Replicates conditions found deep within the Earth’s mantle.
  • Carbon is subjected to temperatures of 1,300–1,600°C.
  • Pressure of around 5–6 GPa converts carbon into diamond.
  • A diamond seed crystal acts as the base for growth.

Applications

  • High-power electronics because of exceptional thermal conductivity.
  • Laser diodes and advanced semiconductor devices.
  • Precision cutting and drilling tools owing to extreme hardness.
  • Industrial manufacturing requiring durable wear-resistant materials.

Global Production

  • Russia is the world’s largest producer of natural diamonds by volume.
  • Botswana leads in market value due to premium mines such as Jwaneng and Orapa.

India’s Position

  • Panna Diamond Belt (Madhya Pradesh) is India’s only commercial producer of natural diamonds.
  • Gujarat is India’s major hub for lab-grown diamond production.
  • India is also the global capital for diamond cutting and polishing.
