LRS remittances 2026 crossed $20 billion in the first eight months of the year, led by overseas travel. The data is relevant to UPSC economy preparation, especially foreign exchange and external-sector transactions.
Quick answer: LRS remittances 2026 reached approximately $20.09 billion during January–August, up from $19.08 billion a year earlier. Under the Reserve Bank of India’s Liberalised Remittance Scheme, resident individuals can send up to $250,000 abroad per financial year for permitted transactions. Travel accounted for $10.96 billion of the eight-month total.
What is the Liberalised Remittance Scheme?
The Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS) permits resident individuals to remit money abroad for specified purposes. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) sets its limit at $250,000 per financial year for permitted current and capital account transactions.
For example, overseas travel is a current account purpose, while permitted investment in foreign equity and debt involves capital account transactions. For background, see CBL’s guide to the scheme.
How much did residents remit in 2026?
Residents sent approximately $20.09 billion abroad under the scheme during January–August 2026. This was about $1 billion, or 5.26%, more than during the corresponding period of 2025.
| Indicator | January–August data |
|---|---|
| Total remittances | $20.09 billion in 2026; $19.08 billion in 2025 |
| Travel | $10.96 billion in 2026; $10.67 billion in 2025 |
| Overseas equity and debt investment | $2.61 billion in 2026; $1.40 billion in 2025 |
In addition, overseas equity and debt investments rose by 86% over the corresponding eight-month period. Compare these figures with CBL’s earlier coverage of outward remittance trends.
Which categories dominated the outflows?
Travel was the largest category in LRS remittances 2026. It includes holidays, business journeys, pilgrimages, medical travel and education-related travel.
In August alone, travel accounted for $1,630.26 million of the $2,738.58 million total, or nearly 60%. Meanwhile, overseas equity and debt investment accounted for $321.53 million, and maintenance of close relatives for $275.43 million.
Education-related travel, including fees and hostel expenses, rose from $450.16 million in March to $855.52 million in August. For financial year 2025–26, travel remittances totalled $16.438 billion.
Why do outward remittances matter?
Outward remittances involve foreign exchange payments from India to the rest of the world. Therefore, their size and purpose are relevant to understanding external-sector flows.
For Prelims, distinguish these outflows from inward remittances sent to India by people abroad. The source also mentions reports of suggested curbs; it does not establish that any new restriction has taken effect.

UPSC links remittances to currency risks; therefore, revise inward and outward flows separately.
