What is Alanine aminotransferase?

Alanine aminotransferase (ALT), also called serum glutamic-pyruvic transaminase (SGPT), is an enzyme found mainly inside liver cells. It plays an essential role in amino acid metabolism and energy production.

Healthy individuals normally have very little ALT circulating in their bloodstream. When liver cells are damaged because of infection, inflammation, fatty liver disease, toxins or injury, ALT leaks into the blood, making it a useful laboratory indicator of liver cell injury.
