Odisha landslide rescue teams are searching for 12 missing people in Ganjam after torrential rain linked to Cyclone Arnab. The disaster is important for geography and disaster management preparation.
Quick answer: The Odisha landslide struck Gidipabali village in Ganjam district on 30 October 2026 after heavy rain associated with Cyclone Arnab. As of 31 October, 12 people remained missing and more than 170 personnel were searching for them. Rain-related incidents had claimed four lives across Kandhamal and Gajapati districts.
Where did the Odisha landslide occur?
The landslide struck a hilltop hamlet in Gidipabali, near the Ganjam–Kandhamal district border. It followed torrential rain under the influence of Cyclone Arnab.
| Feature | Fact |
|---|---|
| Village and block | Gidipabali, Bhanjanagar block, Ganjam |
| Hamlet population | 26 people |
| Relocation and rescue | 13 relocated; one subsequently rescued alive |
| Nearby river | Rushikulya, in Ganjam |
Officials initially received reports of 13 missing residents. After one person was rescued, 12 remained missing; earlier CBL coverage explained the Odisha evacuations ahead of Cyclone Arnab.
What is the rescue and flood situation?
More than 170 personnel were searching for missing residents as officials from Ganjam and Kandhamal coordinated operations. Teams included the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF), fire services and Odisha Police’s Special Operation Group.
Meanwhile, nearly 40,000 people remained in 367 relief camps across Ganjam. Floods affected more than 1.05 lakh people in Ganjam and over 25,000 in Gajapati.
Three family members died in a separate landslide at Dangesi village in Kandhamal’s Raikia block. In addition, officials confirmed one death in Gajapati, taking the rain-related toll to four.
What did the weather forecast say?
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast another cyclonic storm over the Bay of Bengal. At 8.30 am on 31 October, it identified a well-marked low-pressure area over the southeast Bay and adjoining areas.
The IMD expected the system to intensify and approach the Andhra Pradesh coast around 2 November evening. This was a forecast, not a confirmed landfall; see also the earlier IMD alert and cyclone formation explainer.
Why does this matter for disaster management?
The Odisha landslide shows how intense rainfall can trigger slope failure alongside flooding. Water can weaken slope material; therefore, evacuation, search coordination and access to relief remain important.
Although the Rushikulya fell below its danger mark, some villages still had stagnant water. Officials also restored electricity in 80 per cent of affected areas and airdropped relief to one inaccessible Ganjam village.
