What is INS Imphal?

INS Imphal is an indigenously built stealth guided missile destroyer of the Indian Navy, part of the Project P-15B series (Visakhapatnam-class). Designed by the Navy’s Warship Design Bureau and constructed by Mazagon Dock Ltd. (MDL), it was commissioned in December 2023 and is the first warship named after a city in the Northeast—Imphal, the capital of Manipur.

The ship boasts a high indigenous content of approximately 75%, measures 163m in length and 17m in breadth, with a displacement of 7,400 tonnes. Propelled by four gas turbines in a Combined Gas & Gas configuration, it can exceed 30 knots (56 km/h) and has an operating endurance of 45 days.

Why is INS Imphal in News?

INS Imphal is in the news for its visit to Muscat, Oman, where over 200 students from Indian schools explored the warship. This highlights India’s growing naval presence and indigenous shipbuilding capabilities.

The vessel is part of the Western Fleet and is equipped with BrahMos missiles, medium-range surface-to-air missiles, indigenous anti-submarine rocket launchers, and a 76 mm super-rapid gun. It also became the first warship commissioned with accommodation for women officers and sailors.
