What are Small Modular Reactors?

Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) are nuclear reactors with a smaller generating capacity than conventional nuclear power stations. Their modular design allows components to be manufactured and assembled more efficiently.

SMRs are suitable for smaller electricity grids or industrial applications and are viewed as a promising approach for expanding nuclear power generation.

Why are Small Modular Reactors in News?

India is considering reducing the minimum land requirement for eligible small nuclear reactor projects. The proposal would lower the requirement from about 330 hectares to around 90 hectares, subject to specified conditions.

Exclusions are proposed for ecologically sensitive areas, forests, wildlife habitats, coastal regulation zones and protected regions. Official policy updates may be tracked through the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE).

Key Features

  • Lower land requirement: Proposed reduction for eligible SMR projects.
  • Modular construction: Reactor components can be manufactured separately.
  • Flexible deployment: Suitable for smaller grids and industrial use.
  • Protected areas excluded: Sensitive ecological regions remain outside the relaxation.
  • Energy transition: Intended to support expansion of clean nuclear electricity.

Challenges

  • Land acquisition: Large projects often face delays.
  • Construction costs: Nuclear infrastructure requires significant investment.
  • Public acceptance: Safety concerns influence project implementation.
  • Regulatory approvals: Multiple clearances are required.
  • Project timelines: Nuclear projects generally have long gestation periods.

Way Forward

India seeks to make nuclear power more deployable while maintaining strict safety standards. Private participation, domestic manufacturing and streamlined regulations could strengthen the sector.

For UPSC, students should connect this topic with energy security, climate commitments, clean electricity and technological innovation. Additional official information is available through the Press Information Bureau (PIB).
