What is Alanine Aminotransferase?

Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT), also known as Serum Glutamic-Pyruvic Transaminase (SGPT), is an enzyme found predominantly in liver cells (hepatocytes). Smaller quantities are also present in the heart, skeletal muscles and kidneys.
