What is the Cauvery River?
Cauvery River, also known as Kaveri, is one of India’s major east flowing peninsular rivers and is often referred to as the ‘Dakshin Ganga’ or ‘Ponni’. It originates from Talakaveri in the Brahmagiri Hills of Karnataka’s Kodagu district and flows for nearly 800 km before draining into the Bay of Bengal at Poompuhar in Tamil Nadu.
The river basin covers nearly 87,900 sq km across Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and the Union Territory of Puducherry. It supports irrigation, drinking water supply, hydropower generation and diverse ecosystems across southern India.
Why is the Cauvery River in News?

About the Mekedatu Project
The Mekedatu Project is a proposed multipurpose balancing reservoir planned by the Karnataka Government near the confluence of the Arkavati and Cauvery rivers in Ramanagara district.
- Location: Approximately 100 km south of Bengaluru and a few kilometres upstream of the Tamil Nadu border.
- Storage capacity: Proposed reservoir capacity ranges from about 48 to 67 TMC.
- Objectives: To provide drinking water to Bengaluru Metropolitan Region and generate nearly 400 MW of hydroelectric power.
