Important for
Prelims: Geography and Environment
Mains: General Studies Paper I
Crust :-
- The outermost layer of the earth .
- There are two types of crust, each with unique physical and chemical characteristics:
- Continental crust;
- Oceanic crust.
- Silica (Si) and Aluminium (Al) are the two main components of the crust, which is why it is Commonly referred to as SIAL
Mantle:-
- The area of the interior that is beyond the crust.
- It is primarily composed of silicon and magnesium, the mantle is also known as SIMA.
- The density of the layer, which ranges from 3.3 to 5.4g/cm3, is greater than that of the crust.
- The entire crust and the topmost solid portion of the mantle comprise the Lithosphere.
Core:
- Layer that surrounds the earth’s core that is the deepest
- It is also called NIFE since it contains nickel (Ni) and iron X (Fe).
- The inner core and the outer core are the sub-layers that make up the Core.
- The inner core is solid, but the outside core is liquid (or semi-liquid)
Seismic Discontinuities
New Fifth Layer
Innermost core :-
- Seismic waves generated by earthquakes have revealed new insights about the deepest parts of Earth’s inner core.
- It is also called NIFE since it contains nickel (Ni) and iron (Fe).
- This layer is a solid ‘metallic ball’ that sits within the center of the inner core.
Practice Questions for Prelims
Consider the following statements:
1. The discontinuity between the Upper and lower crust is termed the Conrad Discontinuity.
