Preterm Births
- In May 2023, United Nations agencies released a new report on pre-term births
- titled “Born too soon: decade of action on preterm birth”.
Preterm births is defined as babies born alive before 37 weeks of pregnancy are completed.
· Categories: There are sub-categories of preterm birth, based on gestational age.
· extremely preterm (less than 28 weeks)
· very preterm (28 to less than 32 weeks)
· moderate to late preterm (32 to 37 weeks).
Findings of recent report
- The report was released by the World Health Organization (WHO), the United
- Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and
- Child Health (PMNCH) – the world’s largest alliance for women, children and adolescents.
- Around 13.4 million babies were born pre-term in 2020 with nearly one million
- dying from complications. Every two seconds, a baby is born too soon. Every 40.
